Canada’s Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods

The Government of Canada has finalized the list of U.S. products that will be subject to retaliatory tariffs.

On July 1, 2018 Canada will impose approximately $16.6 billion in surtaxes on imports originating out of the United States in response to U.S. actions on certain steel and aluminum products from Canada. The additional 25% or 10% countermeasure is applicable on all goods of U.S. origin shipped on July 1, 2018 and thereafter.

Goods released from a Customs Bonded or Sufferance Warehouse on or after July 1, 2018 will also be subject to the surtax regardless of the date of importation. Canada’s Duties Relief and Drawback programs for importers covers duties and surtaxes. These measures mirror the US restrictions and guidelines.

Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) regulations require documentary proof of “date of direct shipment” at time of clearance. Please notify your vendors to include the Bill of Lading with all other customs documentation.

The listing of goods is extensive.  We recommend all importers in Canada review and prepare.
